The MediClin Heart Center Lahr/Baden is one of Germany’s most modern specialized hospitals. Qualified and devoted staff treat more than 5,000 patients per year.

Interdisciplinary therapy approach
In the year 2009 the 25000th patient will undergo open heart surgery at the MediClin Heart Center in Lahr. This number reflects the high level of acceptance of the hospital by both patients and referring physicians. The even higher number of diagnostic and therapeutic heart catheter interventions performed by our Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology is proof of the interdisciplinary therapy approach to the advantage of the patients entrusted to our care.
The proven quality of our procedures and treatment success has resulted in our patients originating not just from our immediate vicinity, the majority come from far away for treatment at our Heart Center in Lahr. Numerous patients come from abroad.
State-of-the-art Cardiology
In the course of the last few years, cardiology has made enormous progress worldwide. The patients at our Heart Center, too, are benefiting from complex technological innovations.
- The services provided by us range from interventional cardiology and electrophysiology to diagnostic procedures such as echocardiography and spiroergometry.
- The spectrum of interventional methods includes not only angioplasty and stent implantation for the treatment of cardiovascular stenoses but also the treatment of carotid stenoses.
- Interventional electrophysiology provides 3D mapping procedures for the ablative therapy of complex atrial tachycardias or atrial fibrillation
Surgical results exceeding the standards
Our hospital has developed numerous innovative surgical procedures for the benefit of the patients entrusted to our care.
- At Lahr, we perform by far the greatest number of bypass operations without the heart-lung machine (OPCAB) in Germany (in terms of percentage and in absolute figures based on the last year analyzed).
- We implant the largest number of stentless freestyle valves in the aortic position worldwide.
- As far as mitral reconstruction at Lahr is concerned, the reconstruction rate is far above average and Lahr takes prime position in this respect in Germany.
- To sum up, an analysis of the quality assurance data in accordance with the European standards (“BQS data”) shows that the surgical results of our Cardiac Center are within the top range of the results achieved in Germany.
Transparency allows for predictable surgical results
From the start, transparency and quality assurance for the benefit of our patients have been a particular commitment for us. Our Heart Center was the first hospital in Germany to publish the results of operations. Since 1995 we have been publishing our performance data in the form of yearly reports – and since 2005 we have been releasing the Federal evaluation of the German Office for Quality Assurance (BQS) which you can access by clicking here.
